This linguistic study is largely based on texts communicated by Alois Belulovici (edited in vol. i) and Matteo Giulio Bartoli (edited in vol. iii), dating from late 19th to early 20th century. It is preceded by a historical overview (in vol. ii, pp. 3-58) on the Balkan Vlachs, which draws heavily on the existing literature. Linguistic evidence leads the author to conclude that Istro-Romanian is a relic of the wider Western Romanian language subgroup, which developed in the North West Balkans, and maintained longer contacts with Daco-Romanian speakers than other Romanian dialects. Similarities within the Eastern Romance languages further suggests that the initial stages of their transformation from Latin to Proto-Romanian happened on a geographically unified area, which has been disrupted sometime after the settlement of the Slavs. (Radu Nedici)
